ARTIST STATEMENT

There is not one definitive message, meaning, or theme running throughout my work. I believe in the art of true expression and some of my most fulfilling experiences with painting have come from just being in the moment. I do little to no preparation or planning beforehand. Colors are almost never determined until I am in the process of painting.

My canvases are layered and distressed. One detail decays as another pops out – similar to habits and traits within my life. I find a comfort in things that are well-worn or seem to have lived a full life and I try to reflect that same feeling in my paintings.

I increasingly find similarities between the evolutionary processes of painting, and my life. By continually working on the process in my artwork, I illustrate the change and growth that happens within me – transforming learned lessons, thoughts, and experiences into a more tangible physical expression. Chaos, happenstance, serendipity and perseverance; these are some of the things that I feel guide my artistic process as well as my life.
